Don Gibson, “The Sad Poet” of country music, recorded Sea of Heartbreak in 1961. By then, he was well established with monster hits Sweet Dreams; Oh, Lonesome Me; and I Can’t Stop Loving You, among others. From 1956 to 1980, he recorded 74 charted singles including 37 top 20, and 24 top 10 country hits. Three were number ones. Not bad for a guy who lost his dad when he was two years old and dropped out of school in the second grade.
